The Ethereum Goerli Testnet Merge is now live!

The Ethereum Goerli Testnet Merge PoS transition was successful yesterday!

Here’s a quick summary of everything you need to know:

So what does this mean? Around 9:46 PM EDT yesterday, Ethereum developers simulated the merge on Goerli and switched from Proof-of-Work to Proof-of-Stake consensus. This means the consensus layer, which has been running a Proof-of-Stake consensus mechanism in parallel to Goerli, merged into Goerli’s execution layer, merging the two systems.

This was the third and final Test Merge, which is the last step before the Ethereum Mainnet Merge, where Ethereum finally transitions from Proof-of-Work consensus to Proof-of-Stake.

And we finalized on goerli 🚀🚀🚀 There was some confusion on the network because of two different terminal blocks and lots of non-updated nodes, so we didn't finalize earlier. We're still looking into whats happening, but so far it looks quite good

A successful Merge = chain finalizes. Sure, participation rate dropped and looks like there may have been an issue with one of the clients but the Merge worked. We'll likely see minor issues like this with the upgrade on mainnet too but the point is, the Merge worked.

@adamscochran @BenDiFrancesco The most relevant testnet merge success metric imo is time-to-finalization. And Prater/Goerli finalized just now (still some hiccups), so I‘d call it another successful test.

Next Steps On The Path To The Merge

So now everyone wants to know, what’s next on the path to the Merge?

Now that the Goerli Testnet Merge PoS transition was successful, this leaves only the Mainnet Merge upgrade!

Earlier today on the Consensus Layer Call, Ethereum developers confirmed the Mainnet Merge will go live between September 15/16! A tenative TTD was set at 58750000000000000000000

The timing of the Mainnet Merge will depend on the difficulty of mining a block, which varies depending on how much mining power is dedicated to the network.

Once the mainnet Merge is completed, hashrate will no longer be relevant as Ethereum moves to Proof-of-Stake consensus, which is dependent on assets staked instead of hashrate.
